The biggest wave ever ridden on a skimboard: Brad Domke

Brad Domke just rode the biggest wave ever surfed on a skimboard. It went down in the swell that recently hit Puerto Escondido, where Shane Dorian airdropped into what might have been wave of the year so far.

You know Mr Domke from here, here, here and here. His unique game of surfing waves on a skimboard, which some choose to call skurfing, is mesmerising. There’s no mods; the board Domke surfs huge Mexican beachies on is the same one he runs in skim contests.

“When you’re drawing the line, you really have to pinpoint the spot on the wave before you even get to it,” he once told Stab in an interview. “On a big wave, you’re going so fast down it, you gotta be used to the feeling of going fast without fins.”

Speaking about a 10 foot Mex beachie session, Domke told us: “Holding my line and my rail, I remember it felt like the most muscles I’ve ever used, my entire body, just for surfing.”

So, uh, imagine holding a line on this avalanche of a wave. Quite honestly, have you ever seen anything like this?

    Why no video??

    • bitter guy

somebody thinks the footy is worth $50k, but he towed in

      • tommy_one

So what, you’d never come close to making it.

        • bitter guy

are you sure he made it? my point is that the owner of the video may be mistaken about its market value. well, to anybody other than RedBull

          • tommy_one

I was there. Brad is unreal. I saw a bunch he made. The cross chop at that time made me eat sand on a couple and I was strapped to a 7’6″thruster. A bunch of companies plus locals were filming. We saw tons of footage that night.
Doing that on what I see is basically a lunch tray takes incredible skill. It’s not like he went out one day and did it. He’s been building up to this for a years now.

How else would you expect to ride a skimboard on a wave of that size?

        • bitter guy

same way you could ride a blow up Shamu

      • laird

        don’t be bitter, guy.

      • Mastra Rahdio

i mean… how coul towin in lessen the epicness of this. Have you ever ride a skimboard on any kind of wave?

        • bitter guy

yeah, they work super good at shorebreak spots. you throw it down then jump on the little thing and scoot right out there and try to do yourself a sweet u-turn before bringing her on back to the sand real smooth like

      • lelek

paddling on a skimboard feels pretty much like bodysurfing with no flippers…

        • bitter guy

did you see that surfboard Dorian used to paddle in to a wave a couple days ago? it was way too thick and long to skimboard on, and the fins would drag in the sand too i think

      • jeremy edwards

of course he was towed in dummy, HE IS ON A FREAKING SKIM BOARD! can’t really run in to that wave OR paddle in to it.. dip shit

        • marky marc

Domke actually does try to paddle in on his skim when it’s smaller and perfect…

      • http://www.pornhub.com Lexington steele

damn internet tough guy over here. you do realize he’s on a skim board right? how else are you going to get on a wave of that size? throw the board from shore like they do at the wedge?

        • bitter guy

if you’re towing in 2014 your board better be weird. its all good. he’s ripping. same as Cirque du Soleil acrobats, very talented folks

    • Richard de Ruijter

I think the video is still to come, (seeing “frame grab” as opposed to “pic” in the caption…)

  • Uncle Reemus

does he rock a diaper underneath his boardies because i’d straight up shit myself right there

  • Jason Hines

    Brad Domke is unreal.

  • JabbaTheHutt

Up in North Queensland we call waterskiing behind a boat with a surfboard “Skurfing”. This is still Skimboarding IMHO.

      Super sick! Thanks!

  • Mastra Rahdio

Shane Dorian… your wave ain’t that cool no more.. Domke the legend. More than skills… you need imagination for this kind of breaking the limits!!

  • http://www.urbanoutfitters.com Luke Davis

I guess this is sort of cool, but I dyed my hair PURPLE today. PURPLE guys. Fucking PURPLE. Also, Surfline let me post really hip nonsense under the guise of Social Absorption! Go check it out! Its so lame its almost cool!

  • http://www.urbanoutfitters.com Luke Davis

I guess this is cool, but I dyed my hair purple today, and that is way more extreme. I mean really, purple hair is way more intense than surfing a 50 footer on a skim board. The purple dye even ruined my favorite skinny jean and thrift store shirt combo. Maybe my mistake was buttoning the shirt all the way to the collar, but I digress, my purple hair is way cooler than this. LIKE ME SURF COMMUNITY!

    • sandy ravage

Oh Luke the purple and your eyes, wow. The whole 805 is “talking” about you……

      • http://www.urbanoutfitters.com Luke Davis

What can I say? I guess I’m just THAT hip!

  • Single Fin

I don’t understand why he just doesn’t get a damn surfboard though

    • Deebo

He does surf in case you didn’t know, but maybe he chooses to ride his skim in these conditions because of the challenge and the feeling. I have no idea what it feels like to ride a wave of this size on a skim obviously, but it is an enjoyable and different sensation in general riding waves on a fin less skim compared to a surfboard. Sure you don’t have the same kind of control, but there is much less resistance, giving you a different fun feeling than surfing.

Ever want to do something nobody else can? Assumed it was a no… For Domke it’s a yes. He likes to be different, and it takes more skill on a skim, so why be upset that he’s not on a traditional surfboard?

    • lelek

cause riding a wave on a skimboard is fun and he wants to be on surf websites too
