Kelly Slater wins the 2011 Hurley Pro, Lower Trestles

And Kelly does it again. The third consecutive final between Kelly Slater and Owen Wright (the first time the two same dudes’ve been in three consecutive finals in ASP history) was wave-starved, and came down to an exchange in the last coupla minutes. Kelly, clever man that he is, had been missing the second, bigger wave of the set all heat, so let Owen take the first wave this time and took the second, bigger one for himself. Owen popped a backside air, threw a 270 finner and a coupla turns, and Kelly went about pulverising his wave to the beach. Owen stood at water’s edge, waiting for the scores to drop, but Kelly ran up to the tower. The scores came in and, like we’ve seen so many times before, Robbie Slater raised his arms above his head and smiled from ear to ear.   Get used to seeing these two on the podium together. This is the third time in as many events. Photo: ASP/Kirstin Kelly’s final wave of the event, a 9.00, was pure power.
