On January 14th and 15th, the Da Hui Backdoor Shootout ran in conditions where words like “monumental, best ever, and historic” slipped from lips. Even Nathan Florence, our co-host in Ep 4 of Pick Up, presented by Vans believes “that day will go down as one of the best surf competition days at Pipe — and the most dangerous.”

Proper Pipeline prevailed over the event window, with the oddball Backdoor drainer. Rides like Moana Jones Wongs’ sent brains spinning, while event-ending (and VTCS dream-crushing) injuries from Kala Grace, Makua Rothman, and Billy Kemper pulled heartstrings.
