Welcome back to PhotoLyfe, in which Stab’s favourite photographers answer questions about themselves with their own images. It’s that old picture-tells-a-thousand-words chestnut but with more colour and pop. It’s a way to cut out all the bullshit. It’s like jacking into the main vein of those who supply us with exquisite surf imagery every day. Give thanks by studying each image with a more careful eye than ever!

Alex Heather hails from Western Australia and has been buttering up Stab’s inbox for the last few years with gorgeous ocean scenery from the outer limits of the country. Think desert hues, empty lineups and breathtaking coastal landscapes, reminding us all of the rewards of trading office cubicles for the open road.

“I guess my interest in photography originated from wanting to hold on to and share what I thought were pretty special moments that would go down on surf trips with mates when we were younger,” Alex told Stab. “Something I now find funny because these days I can’t fathom the level of self-obsessive over sharing on social media.”

“I remember I saved up my apprenticeship pay for a solid six months and ordered a custom made Dave Kelly warehousing for a Canon 1000D dad had bought me. It came in the mail and two days later I was on my maiden road trip to South Australia. I’ve been hooked on surf photography, especially shooting water ever since. Having said that it’s not something I have ever taken to seriously or have any real aspirations for outside of nailing some good shots of my mates. I try to surf these days too and still bodyboard when I can – but it’s kind of hard to balance them all… and work the grind.”
