A $75k Surf Contest In Snowy Switzerland Is Not Something You See Every Day

Or every week, for that matter. The Alaia Bay Winter Cup is coming soon.

On Friday, December 5, as snowflakes descend upon the quaint village of Sion, Switzerland, a surf champion will be crowned and given a check for $10,000.

Well, that’s not entirely true. A handful of champions will be crowned — from divisions that span men’s, women’s, junior’s, and kid’s. And both the male and female champions will win $10k.

We can’t be sure about the descending snowflakes, either. But we can say that this weekend has a high of 32 F/0 C with snow.

All that said, the Alaia Bay Winter Cup is unlike any other surf contest we’ve encountered. Aside from the cold, human-made waves and relatively high prize purse, the two-day event also promises intentional DJs and a hell of a party on Saturday night. Rumors are currently circulating in the Alps suggesting that Stab’s Editor in Cheif, Brendan Buckley, will surf in the event. We’re told he’ll be joined by Stab High judge Ainara Aymat and the one-man German storm, Leon Glatzer.

Want to join them? Spots are still available, and the entry window closes on Monday. The entry fee is 199 Frs (approximately $215 USD) and includes a Friday warm-up session, a full 1-hour qualification’ best side’ heat, and more.

It should be interesting.
