Stab in the dark

See below… Everything gets old, after a while. It’s just how it goes. You chase something, catch it, turn it over in your hands, and it gives up a little of whatever made you want it in the first place. Solve a Rubik’s Cube once, learn the sequence, and it stops being a puzzle. You can still twist and turn the colours into order, but the mystery is gone.  We don’t actually want resolution, us humans. We like being close, circling it, the feeling that something could make sense if only we stared at it little longer. Chess runs on this. The universe runs on this. Robert Kelly Slater does too. We’ve been squeezing the Slater sauce for decades now, and the thing won’t drain. How does one person hold so much attention for so long?  I suspect it’s because we can never truly know him, never truly understand him. Not really. Kelly looks like a surfer, like a man, but he’s more like an infinity simulator. There’s always more to him. Another layer, another contradiction, another decision that defies any logic you’ve imposed. His motivations are a mystery and, to some extent, one might think they’re a mystery even to him. Somehow, all the things we can’t make sense of in Kelly, every fragment of instinct trapped inside a bone cage much like your own, have produced the best surfer that ever was, and maybe the best there ever could be. We may never pick the lock and see what lies behind the door of full Slater understanding, but perhaps these files offer a small peephole into an unknowable world. Much of SITDX had the shapers talking about Kelly. Here, Kelly talks about the shapers, raked-fin theory, why he initially turned up his nose at Dan Mann’s boards, shelved them for two years, and then returned to find more life in them than anything he’d felt in the previous decade. “Surfing is all about feelings, being creative, and finding new and unique feelings,” Kelly says. “If you’re just doing the same thing over and over, if your mind isn’t open to discovering new things on different waves, you lose that excitement. You just get jaded.” Hit play on Volume 2 of the Kelly Files above. We’ll be dropping these volumes in digestible chunks over the next two weeks. Each time we do, we’ll give away two boards from the show to two lucky Premium members (last week’s winners will be announced tomorrow). Want to win one from the first batch of SITD X boards?
