When you’re behind the lens for 12 hrs straight, get educated!

Ryan Miller’s method of killing time between the shutter.

Badboyryry AKA Ryan Miller is the Mick Fanning of surf photography. The cat’s an overachiever and rakes in more dough than the rest of his lens centered colleagues. With remarkable discipline, he plays to his strengths without falter, all the while working on his weaknesses. At the end of a day that deserves one too many libations, high-fives and opportunistic bird calling, Miller instead heads home to curate his now-famous daily email to his clients. Just as Mick won’t waste his time on waves without scoring potential, Ryan won’t waiver on his rate with clients. Which is unheard of in surfing and the result’s more contracts in his back pocket than any other surf photog. He listens to podcasts on the sand to kill time between clicks, and of course his listening list is inspiring.

How long do you spend on the beach when you’re shooting?
Can be anywhere from 2-12 hours straight. Most of the time somewhere in the middle but if the waves are pumping I just power through dark till dark.

Did you ever listen to music and then transition to podcasts?
Yeah for sure and I guess that is how I got into podcasts. After listening to my entire iTunes library a thousand times I was ready to throw my phone in the ocean.

What do you like about podcasts?

I’m pretty dumb. Couple that with not being a very good reader and it’s hard to get new pertinent information. I can learn something new and the day flies by compared to listening to music.

What makes a good podcast?
Anytime I can walk away knowing something I didn’t before starting I would rate it as good. That and the podcast host needs to be easy to listen to. Love listening to stuff that I am not super well versed in.

Tell us about your listening habits? What radio stations would you recommend right now?
– Freakononomics: Explores the riddles of everyday shit. Things that make you wonder but would have no idea where to find an answer.
– The No Huddle Show: A podcast about the Philadelphia Eagles NFL team. Gotta stay up to date with the Eagles!
– Savage Lovecast: Dan Savage the sex writer does a call in podcast. He gets some fucking freaks on here and answers with such amazing non-judgement.
– Death, Sex and Money: Dealing with those three topics that are often too hard to talk about in day to day conversation.
– Serial: This is the holy grail of podcasts that can get anyone hooked. A true crime story detailing a decade old case in which the convicted could or could not be guilty.
– Surf Splendor: Pretty surfy if you want that. Dig deep through their feed to find the interviewees you are interested in and give those a go.

Honorable Mentions:  Reply All, Criminal, Radiolab, Stuff You Should Know, This American Life

And, when you’re deep in a podcast, what is the most common question you’re interrupted with?
“Who’s surfing out there?” That gives me the shits.
