The Hurley Winter Classic Tunes Up
Surfing, the Goons Of Doom, and the best way to spend a long weekend.
Normally we don’t cover the everyday local comp, but this year’s Hurley Winter Classic deserves recognition. Kicking off last Saturday to peaky conditions and bluebird skies, it was tough to find a competitor sprinting down to the beach without a smile. The fifth instalment of the annual event set at Parson’s Beach in South Oz, this year again featured local stars and non-regional competitors alike. It was Manly’s Blake Levitt who beat QLD’er Tim Macdonald for the win in the ramping beach break.
And while the contest ran smooth as a compliment, things didn’t wrap up right after the final blare of the horn. The following after party saw the Hurley printing press providing the hard goods while the Goons Of Doom brought the sounds. Those willing and able to shake off the dust in the morning were welcomed to refine their aquatic prowess at the Hurley Surf Club as well. It’s a contest that’s as rootsy as can be but makes sure to provide entertainment for competitors and viewers alike. We’ll let the photos above tell the rest of the story.

1st place: Blake Levitt.
2nd place: Tim Macdonald.
Equal 3rd place: Darcy Crump, Asher Wales.
Equal 5th place: Khai Adams, Garry Hayworth
