Watch A TV Host Surf Kelly Slater’s Wave Pool
A shakka-heavy first look at the Lemoore pool’s beginner-friendly section.
Shakka (shah-kuh)
1. Noun. An ancient Hawaiian hand gesture whereby the thumb and pinky fingers are extended whilst the index, middle and ring fingers take the form found in a fist.
2. Verb. To shakka, meaning to ‘hang loose’, take it easy, chillax or even #yolo.
Thanks, Urban Dictionary. Now, let’s see it in action:
Natalie Morales, of the Today Show, recently visited Kelly’s personal hypebeast aka ground zero of the Kelly Slater Wave Co, a wave pool 110 miles inland, in Lemoore. There’s not a whole of new information to be syphoned from the segment – the news having broken last night that WSL Holdings were purchasing a majority stake in the company – but it’s always interesting to hear Kelly talk about his baby, and the piece features some rather excellent high action reporting; Nat riffing from the back of a ski while Kelly gets tubed behind her. We even see her actually riding a wave. It’s our first look at the more user-friendly side of the tech (aka the VERY monetisable part), complete with many, many shakkas from the wonderful reporter. Very enjoyable, four and a half stars.
