Someone Just Won A Traditional(ish) Surfboard, Care Of Steph Gilmore And Corona
Shaped by the (arguably) most influential shaper to ever put planer to foam.
You all know the story.
Narrabeen’s finest. Giant Bells. A board with (a non-patented) three fins. The single greatest leap in surfing performance since the shortboard (and trunks) revolution.
While we were hellbent on straying from the “conventional” in Steph Gilmore’s Electric Acid Surfboard Test, the concepts of diversity and representing all corners of the surfing landscape stated that a tri-fin had to be included somewhere. So we figured, if we’re going to include a thruster, we may as well ring the design’s originator, Simon Anderson.
After doing so, we prayed to an array of gods for clean, steep walls to allow the greatest female surfer of all time (the most certain of this platitude-laden intro) to show us what she’s got.
Whilst we didn’t quite luck into the conditions to wholly celebrate Simon’s mammoth contribution to surfing, Steph still proved the tri fin’s superiority in junky (but by no means unappealing) surf. Simon’s creation for EAST heavily referenced his original thruster designs (mmm, those hips!) but with modern tweaks. In our humble opinion, the blending of old and new characteristics in surfboards is the single greatest thing to happen to the average surfer since the legrope.
Unfortunately for us/fortunately for you, we (and our amigos at Corona) have got to give this one away too, so, drumroll, here’s the lucky so-n-so:
Henry Collins, you sir, just won a surfboard.
Stay tuned for the next item off the lot, a Simon Jones (aka Morning of the Earth Surfboards) chosen by the pilot of this little social experiment, Miss Stephanie Gilmore.
