Photolyfe: Nick Bannehr
An eye for the elements.
Welcome to PhotoLyfe, in which Stab’s favourite photographers answer questions about themselves with their own images. It’s that old picture-tells-a-thousand-words chestnut but with more colour and pop. It’s a way to cut out all the bullshit. It’s like jacking into the main vein of those who supply us with exquisite surf imagery every day. Give thanks by studying each image with a more careful eye than ever!
Hailing from Sydney’s East, Nick Bannehr gets his thrills from outside of the city, amongst diverse and wild landscapes. He was 15 when he was gifted his first camera, a prehistoric GoPro, which consisted of a 35mm auto exposure film body in a plastic housing. From that moment, Nick had the bug; he wanted to capture everything he witnessed, especially in the water. His fascination and eagerness led him around Australia and overseas – chasing storms, encountering whales and sharks and watching his friends take some of the worst beatings of their lives. Bannehr’s last round of travels has inspired the works in his first solo exhibition – ‘Dialectic North’.
‘Dialectic North’ is hanging at Special Group Studios in Surry Hills until Monday 18 September. Go here for the exhibition catalogue or to see some of Nick’s other work, check out his Instagram.
