Melbourne’s URBNSURF Has New Waves And Experiences In The Works

Fine-dining, outdoor amenities, and entertainment options for the whole fam.

Australia’s been incredibly strict on covid. Just ask the tennis players. Or the Championship Tour surfers currently idling away in Sydney hotel rooms.

On the upside, this international stringency has allowed Australia to be lenient within its borders. Due to incredibly low infection rates, Australians can now congregate in large groups, dine indoors, and attend recreational venues and events.

Like, say, wavepools.

Australia’s only current commercial pool, Melbourne’s URBNSURF, has seen a rabid influx of surfers since re-opening in October 2020. Through the Australian spring and summer, guests have flocked to their concrete shores for a taste of chlorine-stained turns and tubes. Pushing regular sets of up to twelve glimmering walls (on both sides of the pool, so 24 total), one wonders how many waves would have been ridden at Tullamrine Intl in the last four months.

Thirty-three thousand? Forty-six trillion?

Both very good guesses. Which one is closer to the truth, we’ll never know. But we do know that URBNSURF has no intention of slowing down. If anything, they plan on beefing up their output.

“We’re working on a new session type, Advanced Turns, which will be launching in February,” says URBNSURF marketing manager, Rupert Partridge. “We’ll be featuring two new high-performance turns waves. One allows you to unload on the first section, followed by another vertical lip, and then a good cutback section to finish. The other provides an easier takeoff with a good carve section, then two steep sections in the middle, and a whitewash section to finish.”

That should be enough to get the fin-drifters and dad-hackers salivating. But how do you convince your non-surfing spouse and kids that Tullamarine is a worthy weekend destination? URBNSURF has you covered here, too.

Just before Christmas, they launched a bunch of new experiences including:
Swim In The Bays – Two-hour swim pass on Fridays, weekends and public holidays.
Cabanas – private spaces you can hire for a half- or full-day
Grom Camps – 1 and 3-day school holiday programs for groms aged 6-12.

Not to mention, UBRNSURF’s elite eatery, Three Blue Ducks Melbourne, is now open for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks daily. They’ve got an incredible menu, local beers on tap, and unmatched views of the basin (at 6pm, the restaurant turns into a hooting/gasping auditorium as people either make Beast Mode pits or get munched).

URBNSURF has also just topped up their stock of JS Boards and are adding Will Webber and Album Surf into the mix, along with a few local shapers from the Surf Coast.

Book a slot (or three) here.
