Connor and Parker Are Paying It Forward
The Coffin boys launch a fundraiser to help their fire, flood and mudslide ravaged hometown.
Connor and Parker Coffin are stepping up to help their local zone. In the last two months, Santa Barbara and Ventura have been burnt, flooded, smashed, and basically destroyed by the forces of nature well beyond anyone’s control.
In December, the Thomas Fire charred Santa Barbara, Montecito, Ojai, Ventura, and surrounding communities. The New Year brought the first legit deluge of the season. In classic California fashion, flash floods and mudslides weren’t far behind.
In bucolic Montecito, where Connor and Parker reside, the storm claimed 21 lives and destroyed an estimated 75 homes.
“We were lucky, our house survived, but that’s not the case for a lot of people,” said Connor, who jumped on the phone with Stab on his way to Hawaii for the Volcom Pipe Pro. “Our friends and neighbors lost everything. It’s devastated the entire community and it’s going to take a long recovery process.”
Right after the slides, Connor felt moved to action. He jumped on Instagram and the wheels of giving began to grind into motion. And now, alongside his brother, it’s go time.
The Coffins partnered up with The Changing Tide Foundation and are running an online raffle for some of their prized possessions—surf gear, surfboards, a sick hollow body guitar, and then some.
They’re putting it all up for grabs with a goal of raising $10k.
“We’re so lucky to have the support that we do from our sponsors, we figured this was the least we could do,” said Connor.
Prizes up for auction include a couple of the boys’ personal C.I. sleds, Connor’s D’Angelico guitar (which he may or may not have slept with a la Hendrix), as well as some “prize packs” featuring loot from Roark, Rip Curl, Future Fins, Nixon, and a bunch of other shwag.
One of the headlines that hit the web when the Montecito mudslides hit, was that Oprah was on scene in mud boots, tending to her property. It’s not much of a secret, the community is known for its affluence. The trend started with Charlie Chaplin back in the day and has continued on today with the likes of Oprah, Ellen DeGeneres and Echo Beach’s Danny Kwock.
But it ain’t all millionaires in them hills, trust us. The Coffin boys are salt of the earth types, and they’re putting the funds raised directly into the hands of some seriously deserving people.
“It’s going to benefit a couple firefighters who lost everything fighting the fires, and then responding to the mudslides,” tells Connor. “We talked to the fire chief and we’re going to be keeping the names anonymous, but we wanted to do something to directly help some people, and these guys, they helped so many people. It’s a small way to say thank you.”
And for just $5 you could just win a slightly worn 5’10” Fred Rubble with Connor’s name scratched down the stringer. Then there’s always that guitar…
