The “F1” of Surf Gear?

Why these unassuming FLORENCE boardies earned the JJF stamp of approval

With a great fit, secure tie, maneuverable yet strong construction, and minimal design these have it all.

Product: FLORENCE F1 Burgee CORDURA® 17.5″ Boardshort

Price: $80

Of all the boardshorts on this year’s roster, these felt the most solid. This isn’t a knock on the other brands, but more a way to highlight the CORDURA® (which we’ve become big fans of in recent years), as well as the concise construction that FLORENCE has become synonymous with.

A clean, simplified design, paired with durable, lightweight fabric allows this streamlined style to fit like a glove. Paired with a sense of structural integrity and bluesign® certified materials, these reach a high standard of performance in more than just wave riding.

In the water, the 17.5″ inch shorts are form-fitting with just a bit of extra space to move in the legs. A stitch-free inseam means zero chaffing when the waves are pumping and going in is not an option. Smart, straightforward fly construction means that they stay on (and tied), even when getting throttled by an overhead set or packing a closeout for the vision. And, with a minimal aesthetic, donning a simple gold flag as a nice touch, these are top candidates for the hard-earned title of “daily driver”.

X-Factors:

  • Patented CORDURA® material is the new international symbol of durability and longevity in textile design.
  • 4 Way Stretch heightens the comfort level further yet, while the quick-dry fabric transitions from sea to land effortlessly.
  • FLORENCE’s C0 DWR (durable water-repellent technology) coating reduces water absorption without expelling harmful fluorocarbons. Yay.
  • The durable, triple-needle construction of these is well-tested in heavy water by brand “test pilots”, saving you the trouble.
  • Minimal additional details, with the exception of the essential side zip pocket with key cord loop.
  • Care Note: Machine wash these on cold, and hang them dry, but do not put them in the dryer. Captain JJ’s orders.

Verdict: We presume the F1s are a must-have from the bossman himself, considering his testing ground of Oahu’s North Shore. Now, if only they could make us surf like JJF…
