The Modom Shark Deterrent Leash Is Finally Here

Risk reduction never looked so good.

If you’re a regular to Stab, you’ll be aware that for some time, we’ve been (highly) anticipating the release of Modom’s Shark Deterrent Leash, developed in partnership with Sharkbanz.

And now… it’s finally here.

Developed over 10 years by senior marine biologists and chemists, the leash creates an electromagnetic field around the surfer which is designed to irritate the shark’s electrical sense (without causing it or any nearby sealife any harm), reducing the risk of attack by sending curious sharks on their way.

Taj Burrow-approved.

Says Modom and Sharkbanz: “The field created around the surfer by the Shark Leash is first detected by the shark’s electrical receptors at approximately two metres, and the unpleasant sensation exponentially intensifies as the shark continues to near the device. Per the laws of magnetism, the field is imperceptible to sharks beyond a distance of two meters. If multiple surfers are wearing the Shark Leash, then the fields can overlap and strengthen the deterrent effect.”

As we’ve mentioned before (and can’t stress enough), nothing on this earth will stop an intoxicated great white in attack mode, but the developers believe the leash will deter them if they’re swimming through the lineup. The leash has shown to have a very strong deterring effect on bull sharks (which are quite partial to humans).

No batteries, no charging, and an unnoticeable amount of extra weight. Plus, of course, the peace of mind that comes with reduced risk. Don’t sleep on this: It ain’t hard to foresee the first release selling out.
