While waiting on the 10AM call for Pipe, and feeling pretty certain that the event wouldn’t go, much of the North Shore were sent scrambling, if only briefly, by a single wave of John Florence’s, a tricky Backdoor double-take tube.

Waiting for coffee in Haleiwa at 9AM, knowing he was second heat in the water if the green light was given, Joel Parkinson had to grab and go in a hurry, his phone lighting up.

“John just got a bomb,” Parko said, half-irritated. “He wants it today. He’s selling it.”

While it wasn’t the Backdoor smoker John picked off last week, with some seriously tricky conditions, John almost made the conditions look contestable. He would have been smart to push the Commish and crew, excitable under tough circumstances, into sending it despite the raw and unruly reality in front of them, tricked by the smoke and mirrors that is John John Florence show, leaving Gabriel Medina to fight his way out of the wooly wilds of the North Shore today.

Alas, the waiting period continues…
