When You Pack Cold Slabs For A Living, Indo Cones Are A Breeze
Anne Dos Santos and the simple joy of a reliable moped in ‘Twenty Two.’
The future of women’s professional surfing is in a good place.
On the competitive front, you’ve got CT event winners and world-title threats like Caity Simmers Molly Picklum (who will hopefully be joined by Erin Brooks and Sierra Kerr soon). And, after a 15-year stranglehold from three tour vets, Caroline Marks metaphorically cemented the changing of the guard, breaking through to win her maiden World Title.
Meanwhile, outside of the world of jerseys and priority, a 22-year-old Brazilian-born, Australian-residing woman has made a name for herself by quietly whipping into some truly heinous tubes near her home and abroad. She may be 5’2, but Anne Dos Santos is more than capable of standing tall when the waves start lurching.
“At the start of my surfing journey, it was a lot of crying and being afraid,” Anne told us in the lead-up to the 2023 Vans Pipe Masters.” Then all of a sudden this switch just clicked in my head and I just wanted to go on anything somebody told me to go on.”
In the 10-minute clip above, Anne slots herself into picture-perfect Nias and more playful north Sumatran peaks. It’s not the backbreaking orbs we’re accustomed to seeing from her (like this Shipstern Bluff deathtrap), but it’s beautifully shot and stylized by filmmaker Shannon Hayes.
Though Anne and Shannon didn’t exactly find purple blobs on the forecast, “Twenty-Two” is a pleasant reminder to appreciate the in-between moments when looking for swells. And the simple joy of a reliable moped.
