Wedge Heads Unite: Dylan Graves & Mason Ho Meet For A Very Strange Party
+ A revolutionary way to use FCS fins.
If you were to cast two characters in the theatre of surfing the world’s most cockeyed waves, Dylan Graves and Mason Ho would be your leads. Dylan, because he spent a whole YouTube series hunting them down. Mason, well, for reasons that needn’t be explained.
The pioneers have met for a very strange party, and it seems they’ve fallen in love.
“Every time I surf this wave, I wonder what Mason Ho would do,” says Dylan, the host.
“Whenever I surf a wedge, I think of you,” replies Mason, his eyes lit with stars.
Very cute. The wave they’re surfing is Dylan’s favourite wedge in Puerto Rico. Two great forces combining, often producing thoroughly entertaining results for the audience, much like the chemistry between Dylan and Mason. But it’s not always so harmonious, says Dylan.
“It’s one of the hardest waves to ride. I can’t tell you how many waves don’t sync up, or how many waves land on your head. It’s terrifying, but really funny when it’s not you. When the stars align and you sync one up, it’s one of my favourite rides you can get.”
The clip also smacks us with the tropical practicality of the FCS fin. After a few hours in the water, Dylan scales a coconut tree, grabs a nut, jumps down, pops out his FCS fin and uses it to hack open the top of a coconut. Then he jams the fin back in, all in about 30 seconds. Brilliant. You won’t get that kind of efficiency with screws.
Well worth your time.
