Watch: Tomas Hermes In “Dreaming Together”

A cinematic, feel-good (short) film from the CT’s newest addition.

Tomas Hermes is a highly likeable gent. Which is great considering we’re about to see a lot more of him come 2018. The Brazilian has a spring-loaded approach to attacking a lip, a very sweet love-slash-working relationship with his woman, Ana Romanio (who was behind the lens on the short film above) and, thanks to a healthy split in his passion for surf and photography seems to hold a level-headed competitive attitude.

A mellow fire, as opposed to the spontaneously combustable kind that can exist at the pointy end of performance surfing.

Along with Ana and the film’s director and editor, Bruno Tessari, the triage produced the eight minute short above, Dreaming Together. It holds a warm aesthetic, cinematic and tastefully scored. The narrative moves about between surf action and the story behind how he and Ana came to have such an enviable and productive relationship (more on this in our interview the pair here).

Overall the film is a fine introductory piece for one of our newest CT family members, but we just had to hear more from Ana:

What’s the best part about being with a traveling pro surfer on the world tour?
The best part for me is that it allows us to share experiences, adventures and moments together. Honestly, I never imagined it, because it was difficult for us to be able to travel together. I can’t even believe that now we are going to go on more trips together next year. It will be incredible!

Did you ever imagine your life would ever involve so much travel, for such an amazing reason? What are some of the difficulties?
We had difficulties in balancing two different professions, him as a surfer and me as an architect. But since my career has allowed me to do things away from home, it has helped a bit. The main difficulty really is finances. In the beginning, I was going on two or three trips with him and we were able to see that the work we were doing together was generating good results, which is where we got more money to continue the process.

In regards to accommodations, we have plenty of stories—from horrible to amazing. A terrible one that I just remembered was in Australia in 2012. We left the airport on foot and in one week we changed hostels 3 times, carrying our bags, equipment and the huge surfboard bags through the streets. We walked for hours. In one of these hostels, which were horrible, we slept with huge spiders in the bedroom and the bed was a twin. Crazy people showed up in the hallway, knocking on the door etc. Today it is one of the funny stories.

Ever get sick of the forever surf talk conversation going amongst the boys?
In the beginning I definitely would get tired—it was surf and more surf. They would repeat the same stories and videos of surf that I know by heart even today. (Which is why I always brought a book to read!) But I have to say that they changed a lot in the way they talk about surf. They are getting more intelligent (laughs), searching and evolving and not just in the sport. Now it is a lot of fun and we are always talking about differing subjects.

What are you looking forward to this year?
Continuing our process and evolving next year. Like this year: we are prepared for anything. I’m sure it will be an incredible year for us both.
