Surf films are often intended to evoke a sense of envy, of untouchableness.
Usually, this is conjured through superhuman surfing at otherworldly waves, resulting in a sort of hifi malaise which few of us might ever hope to emulate or experience.
Sometimes, however, this envy is coaxed from our limbic system in a slightly more relatable way.
The video above, created over the course of a beer-filled Canggu beach day by our friends at Onboard Store, falls into the latter category.
A day in the sun riding various boards with various friends is something we can all aspire to enjoy — especially if said friends are Tosh Tudor, Shane Sykes, Rolo Montes, Ryuki Waida, Kian Martin, and Brad Flora.
“We were inspired by the film that Dane made,” Charlie Stambo from Onboard told me. “I was looking up in the roof at work, realizing we have our own stock of boards from the past decade or so of crew coming to Indo. I kept looking at some of Dane’s old boards from the Kai Neville films, and then Bobby’s board on the wall got me so stoked.”
“It was our 10 year anniversary for CI Bali, so we called all the boys and grabbed a bunch of the boards and brought them down. Because it’s Indo, there’s always random pro surfers around. We didn’t even plan on seeing Shane Sykes, Tosh, or Rolo. They were just partying with us the night before to celebrate the anniversary, and after a few beers we were telling them to come down to the beach. It was so last minute, but we knew the waves were gonna be fun. It took a while for everyone to rock up, you can see in the video when we’re first walking out that everyone is hungover,” he laughs.
As you’ll see, some of the boards work well, and some hardly float. Dane Reynolds offers his feedback on a handful of his designs — including one memorably painted stick from Kai Neville’s ‘Cluster.’
“The Bobby board was mental,” Charlie recalls. “Everyone who rode that board said it felt magic and brand new. It was so old, it shouldn’t have worked. It only had one glass on, and the other one was broken out. So we ripped it out and put Future boxes in there. It had Futures and then old FCS plugs in the back. It was a weird setup but it fully worked.”
