For the surf cinephile, Reunion Island holds a special place in the dais.

Seventeen years ago, Jordy Smith went out of body at a never-before-seen right in Modern Collective. Two years later, he and Julian Wilson returned and battled in Bending Colors, resulting in the best surfing Ryan Miller has ever seen. More recently, Mikey Wright, Rolo Montes, Kael Walsh and Al Cleland Jr. rolled up and pieced the joint in Quiksilver’s Repeater.

With Reunion’s shark issue largely at bay, Jordy finally made his return to Reunion, this time with another gifted sparring partner in Eli Beukes. The 25-year-old South African has the ability to surf light as a whisper or heavy as granite, depending on his approach to the lip.

Jordy says Eli pushed him at La Jetée, of which we’re all direct beneficiaries. Hit play above to see a near-40-year-old air-mailing sections you’d almost definitely kick out of.

And before we go: is this our next Stab High ocean venue?

The guy can spin with the best of them.
