Watch: Best Stab High Ever?
We’re not into hyperbole — just repeating what we heard on site.
Watch the full Day 2 replay here.
You can argue that Hughie Vaughan shouldn’t have won Stab High Japan.
His air was the best of the final — no doubt about it. But, going into the event, we planned to count the top left and right scores from the final.
Then the wind came ripping in, which cooked the rights but brought the lefts to a perfect level of crisp. After a morning of boards flying in every which direction on rights, while there were many completions on lefts, the judges and finalists got together and decided that only one score should count.
Looking back, that was the way it should have been anyway. Two waves would make it more strategic — more like a normal comp. One wave makes it so that the best air wins.
Today, the best airs won. Congrats Skai Suitt, Loci Cullen, Sierra Kerr, Joel Vaughan, and Yago Dora.
And what can be said about the vibe (or do events have aura?) on site? Well, we heard ‘best Stab High ever’ thrown around with remarkable frequency. We’re not gonna pump on our books, but we will let you decide.
Until next time.
