Watch: Another Remarkable Stop On Nate Florence’s Fear Safari

“Just me, Ivan, and a heaving slab for two hours straight.”

Imagine Europe, and your mind drifts to the polite and the pretty: velvet pockets, old money, a cocktail in Paris, maybe a dust-flecked farmhouse.

Nate Florence’s latest stop on his shallow water circuit, however, reveals more of the grit lurking beneath the EU’s refined elegance.

“Just me, Ivan, and a heaving slab for two hours straight,” Nate quips into his selfie cam after the session, his beard framing a grin. The wave looks like it’s pulled straight from a desert coastline in Australia, complete with a healthy dose of treachery.

A minute into the clip, Ivan stands in ankle-deep water before breaking into a slow jog, then a panicked sprint as a thick-lipped behemoth detonates a metre in front of him. “Rock factor: very high,” says Nathan, approvingly.

The second half of the clip rolls through snippets from the Big Wave Awards in Nazaré, where Nathan takes home the title of Surfer of the Year. Honestly, that’s so 2023. Sigh. Another accolade for yet another Florence.
