Wait, Did DJ Kingpin Fisher Actually Beat World Champ Joel Parko in a Surf Comp?
Highlights from Saturday’s craft-specific comp.
There is only one surf contest in the world where Paul Fisher can take out Joel Parkinson.
We told you the Burleigh Single Fin Festival presented by Billabong would be stellar viewing, and that’s not just because it’s the last contest we’ll witness in quite awhile. Watching modern surfing on pre-1985 craft is good fun, but the fact that this event was able to run for its 23rd consecutive year was as heartwarming as it was entertaining.
The waves may not have been all-time, but I could think of few conditions better suited for the thick, boxy railed single fins many of these competitors had underfoot. Mind you, this is Burleigh Heads were talking about, where everyone and their mother can wet a respectable rail, including platinum recording artist Paul Fisher, who hasn’t missed a beat in the club or the surf, taking out Joel fucking Parkinson in one of the strangest plot twists of the past 12 months.
Only in surfing do we have the equivalent of a Nascar driver taking his family’s station wagon out for a weekend lap. Click above for an all around good time.
