Tyler, Tati, And Caroline Discuss A Potential Women’s Event At Teahupo’o
“Honestly, that place is terrifying.”
At last year’s Tahiti Pro, the WSL welcomed its best swell for the event since 2014.
Among myriad stellar rides and performances in the event itseld, we also saw ex-CTer Jesse Mendes’ then-girlfriend (and a Tour surfer in her own right), Tatiana Weston Webb, slide into several notable tubes between heats and on lay-days.
Following the event, we asked Tati if she thought the women should alsohave a Teahupo’o CT event, and despite several encounters with the reef, her answer was mostly in the affirmative.
Then in early 2020, Caroline Marks spent her 18th birthday lacing almond-butter tubes on the Tahitian left-hander. In a mostly-empty lineup, Caroline found great success on her first French Polynesian venture.
Tyler Wright has only surfed Teahupo’o once before, but it was on a swell so large and confronting that she’s been traumatized since.
In this chat with WSL Chief Brand Office Dave Prodan (listen to our Stab CUSP ep with Dave here), the gals discuss their experiences and what they’d think of running a women’s Tahitian event in the future.
Whether or not WSL decides to reinstate the women’s CT Teahupo’o event, it’s worth noting the 2024 Olympics will be heading to Teahupo’o—with both genders on the docket.
