Could Cape Fear Run This Weekend?

Probably not, but allow us to entertain the thought.

There isn’t an event on tour that comes close to evoking the intoxicating mix of nerves and excitement that the Cape Fear Challenge does. Maybe the Eddie…but for different reasons.

It’s been a year since 18 year-old Russell Bierke took home the crown, a year since Justin “Jughead” Allport went home in a stretcher and two years since Koby Abberton had that infamously botched rock off (below).

Much to the delight of the Australian east coast, the forecast for the Sydney region is literally calling for “Epic” conditions on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend. It will be clean, it will be south east and the period looks fantastic. Should we be staying within Wi-Fi range?

Bad news is we are in the middle of July and the contest window closes on August 31st. Time’s ticking and quite frankly, the three metre pulse currently unravelling will likely fall disappointingly short compared to the super storm swell of June 2016. Knowing this, would they run? Unlikely. We’re not on red alert, more a soft-amber. Either way, there’s nothing wrong with glancing in the rearview – or being prepared.
