Tom Curren’s Daughter Directed, Produced, Edited, Scored, And Starred In This Vans Womens Surf Film
Watch ‘Cadavre Exquis’, starring Karina Rozunko, Hanna Scott, Bella Kenworthy and more.
Exquisite Corpse, from the original French term “Cadavre Exquis” is a method in which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled. Each collaborator adds to a composition in sequence, being allowed to see only the end of what the previous person contributed.
Being both French and an artist (in every sense of the word), Lee-Ann Curren — daughter of equally eccentric Tom — decided to apply the concept of Cadavre Exquis to surf film-making. And when you think about it, this makes perfect sense in the middle of a global pandemic, where travel and collaboration are limited by both law and logic.
Lee-Ann’s task: combine surfing from 11 of Vans Womens’ most esteemed international surfers, without doing a single trip together, and make it feel cohesive — like it wasn’t just a bunch of hard drives shipped around the world and smashed together.
To do this, Ms. Curren had to get creative…and put in some serious legwork. The cadavre exquis concept was ingenius, but Lee-Ann’s efforts didn’t end there. Come the film’s conclusion, you’ll see that her credits include: director, producer, art director, musician, editor, and co-star.
Where she found time for an evening glass of wine, we have no idea.
The film also stars Margaux Arramont-Tucoo, Ainara Aymat, Lee-Ann Curren, Leila Hurst, Lola Mignot, Pua Desoto, Karina Rozunko, Bella Kenworthy, Hanna Scott, Holly Wawn & Chelsea Woody.
