This Is What Caroline Marks Was Doing Instead Of Surfing G-Land
A tutorial on bouncing back(side).
Caroline Marks hasn’t publicly discussed the recurring medical and health issues she dealt with that caused her to miss four months and the first half of the Women’s Championship Tour this year. Even after the WSL granted her a season wildcard for the back half of the season and entry into the start of the 2023 tour, she withdrew from the G-Land Pro.
However, this time, the reason was clear: A Red Bull-backed trip to the Mentawais to regain all of her strength and composure in pristine lefts and rights.
Sounds like a good deal. But was it, Caroline?
“Super fun,” she told Stab last month. “It was my first boat trip ever, so I didn’t know what to expect. Being in the middle of the ocean with a few other Red Bull athletes and no service was a lovely, focused environment. It was nice to be present, disconnect, and surf rippable 4-6 ft Macaronis and HT’s for a week or so.”
In that interview, Caroline shared that she’s used the time off to reset and refocus so she can come back even stronger. After some god R&R&R (rest, relaxation and ripping), it sure does look like she’s back to her old self. Just look at the clip above (Filmed and edited by Noah McPherson with help from Jimmicane) and deduce for yourself. The Ments section was filmed during the G-Land contest.
Now back full-time on the CT, Caroline has finished third and fifth in the two post-cut events she’s entered (El Salvador and Brazil, respectively). Both times she lost to the eventual event winner (Stephanie Gilmore in El Salvador and Carissa More in Brazil). With J-Bay and Teahupoo up next, don’t be surprised to see Caroline play spoiler to the Final Five race.
