This is Pretty Much the Best Boardshorts Ad We’ve Seen

When you’ve got a team as stacked as Billabong’s, and the surf’s been as good as it has been this year, the hardest things about shooting a boardshorts commercial is getting the Aussies to surf in trunks when it’s not quite warm enough.

Occy, Jack, Ethan, Creed, Ryan, Griffin, Joel, Chun, Jai G, jeez the list goes on. And seeing that the majority of them reside on the east coast of Australia, which has been pumping for, seemingly, most of the year, a smorgasbord of a pre-summer boardshorts ramp up is a pleasure, rather than a chore.

As for highlights, they are many in the latest instalment of “Life’s Better in Boardshorts”, the slogan that keeps on giving. Ethan Ewing’s rail work is, frankly otherworldly. Creedo’s fit, tanned, tatted-up and surfing better than ever. Ryan Callinan is the best goofyfooter in Australia by a country mile, and speaking of goofys, damn the Raging Bull’s still got it (see the “Zaaas” at 7:19 and 7:30 for conformation.)

When it comes to the young bucks Dakoda seems like he’s already got every trick on the list ticked of, and is only getting better. Margo Jr seems more and more likely to inherit the family heirlooms with each yeah (although Papa Margs doesn’t look like he’s slowing much either). And Jai Glindeman, well, you’ll be seeing far more of this northern rivers prince on this channel in the coming months, but let us just say that the blissed-out slide at 9:40 is but a fraction of this young man’s powers.

Billabong’s boardshort heritage is a living, breathing organism, and for this season they’re opening the vault from nearly all the years and styles past. The “design your own trunks for summer” play is no novelty, and we’ve been arguing over eras and waistbands for the past two weeks, trying to combine the perfect elements of decades past into the ultimate trunks for summer.
