The Strange Ecosystem That Produced Ryan Huckabee

Thanks to the tyrants overseeing SEOTY, Ryan Huckabee was once barred from entering with HUCK, his 2024 edit. Music clearance was non-negotiable back then, and it ended up on the main page as a sort-of bootleg entry.

Ryan’s surfing did not go unnoticed, and he has remained somewhere in our peripheral vision ever since.

Today, we’re sharing the first in a new series produced, directed, and distributed by Erratic Nerve. The East Coast collective chose the Flagler Beach surfer as the subject for CREATURES, their new moving-picture profile series.

Ryan talks through his upbringing, his relationship with surfing, getting bombs at Pipe, and the strange little Flagler Beach ecosystem that formed him, described by his Challenger Series travel companion Dimitri Poulos as “a shitty beachbreak with a pier.”

Erratic Nerve says there’ll be more of these coming, all focused on characters from different parts of the “Right Coast.”
