Former World Tour surfer Mick Campbell was reportedly found unconscious in the surf at Iluka’s North Wall earlier this week. According to the The Daily Examiner, paramedics were called to the beach at around 10:50 am after hearing reports of three surfers caught in a rough swell. The 1998 ASP Tour runner-up was hit in the head with board and found unresponsive, and CPR was performed on him until he regained consciousness. He was quickly taken to Lismore hospital, where he returned to a stable condition.

Mick was a passionate overachiever during his time on the World Tour and had deep reserves of self-belief, never backing down to any challenge or anyone. A characteristic more famously displayed when he fought Andy Irons in the competitor’s area in Hossegor after a heat in 2000.

Mick is reportedly doing well now. According to an Instagram posted by his girlfriend, Tahlija Redgard, he’s now out of the hospital:

“Today my best friend walked out into the winter air… And felt the sun and the breeze for the first time in 6 days and five nights … We almost lost him! He nearly left this world… Maybe he did for a short space of time! But he’s a fighter and the strongest person to ever walk this earth in my eyes… And he fought the whole way from the water till today when he walked out of those hospital doors… One step at a time we busted down doors getting healthier Mick never stopped fighting the whole way! And today we busted down the big door to a massive accident that could of happened to anyone… And now time to recover and get right back to where we were before it happened…”

Stab wishes Mick a swift recovery and we’re happy to hear he’s doing fine now.
