Reminder: Imaikalani Devault Is Back On The CT And His New Boards Look Exquisite
Sometimes it take an initial relegation for competitive surf actualization.
In all our clamoring about the fellas from San Clemente taking home the lion’s share of CT qualification spots, we’ve hardly mentioned Imaikalani Devault.
In fairness, Imai has already qualified for the CT once before, so we weren’t particularly surprised that he managed his way back to the top rung. But, the surfing he showcases in the above clip is of an even higher degree than we’ve seen from him.
Though Imai had a relatively lackluster year on the 2022 tour — his best result a 9th at Bells — it wasn’t for a lack of talent. And, as we’ve seen with Ethan Ewing, sometimes it takes an initial relegation for top-level surfers to hit their full stride. Looks like it helps that he’s hopped on Channel Islands since his inaugural CT season as well.
Here’s some more proof that Imai is a seriously top-level surfer, with incredible power showcased across Maui and Oahu’s marquee venues (including a cameo from the incorrectly sized G-Skate he cosmically meshed with.)
