Free For All: Glad You Scored
Dane Reynolds and co. were hiding a bunch of A-clips. You can find them, here.
They say constraints breed creativity and Dane Reynolds’ latest film, Glad You Scored, proves the axiom.
The constraints included, but were not limited to:
- Time (six months)
- Business (Former and Chapter 11)
- Family (wife and three kids)
All were speed bumps between Dane and a film with top-shelf surfing in pumping, uncrowded waves. And we should be grateful those headwinds existed, as Dane was forced to get creative — and a bit meta — by making a surf film about making a surf film. The failed strike missions. The waves they missed elsewhere. The lost luggage. The heckling. Director Hunter Martinez co-stars, and never rides a wave.
Just as Dane humanized himself via wipeouts and awkward moments in his Marine Layer days, he’s now peeled back the curtain on the ups and downs and downs of making a film that’s worthy of Vans’ budget, and that he’s proud to show you.
It’s entertaining and revealing, and even if the waves aren’t always pumping*, gracious as ever, Dane’s glad you scored.
*No spoilers, but despite the name, Dane gets very barreled in proper waves.
