Noah Beschen And Eimeo Czermak Revive Surfing’s Most Perilous Angle
Two men and one heavy camera underneath the same lip, thanks to Swatch.
Last year, Noah Beschen dropped a YouTube piece called ‘NOAH | The Art of Surfing.’
YT piece might be underselling it, actually. The film is 23 minutes long and, action-wise, it features everything from a double-spin to a Big Mac Teahupo’o whip-in.
When not depicting the negotiations between a surfboard, a body, and a wave, ‘NOAH’ features a variety of thoughtfully curated cinematic shots. It sure ain’t the 16mm hits of random shit we’ve grown used to in surf edits.
“I kinda ended up spending all my money to make that film,” he told us. “That made sense to me, because that’s kind of why I’m getting paid that money in the first place. Andy and I traveled around and pretty much shot that whole thing ourselves. I already had a Komodo. Andy built out a van and sold it so he could buy a Raptor, so we had two RED cameras.”
Nearly 300k views later, Noah and Andy now have a proof of concept to show what they’re capable of together. Last year, Noah inked a deal with Swatch, which granted him the most desirable combo for a free surfer: Budget and creative freedom.
In due time (a few days before a swell was set to hit Mainland Mex), Andy and Noah decided to revisit what is arguably surf filming’s most valiant pursuit: The double barrel.
Pioneered by French photographer and now Emmy award-winning cinematographer Laurent Pujol in the early 2010s, the genre reached its apex of danger with Mark Mathews and Taj at The Right in 2014 (yeah, that was us). Leroy Bellet gave that title quite a crack as well.
So, what’s new about Noah and Eimeo’s effort? They did it with a FreeFly Ember camera that shoots up to 800 frames per second. It’s quite easy to hold a GoPro behind someone — different story when you’ve got a pool noodle-covered monstrosity that weighs 20 pounds.
The BTS edit, embedded above, makes for quite a fun watch. There’s a lot of good surfing in here — including quite a large, almost-made air about 4 four minutes in, that caught us off guard.
