Love (Machines) In Modern Times feat. Ryan Lovelace And William Aliotti
Long distance isn’t always the wrong distance.
Coinciding with the coronation of this year’s King of the EAST, the first episode of Kelly Foote’s six-part series Not By Chance peeks into the long-distance relationship between Ryan Lovelace and William Aliotti.
Having crossed paths only twice, the pair is determined to keep their partnership afloat through the inevitable succession of trials and errors that come with any meaningful long-term alliance.
In The Parlez Between, Ryan and William lay bare the inner workings of their dynamic over 30 minutes. Foote finds Lovelace in his Santa Barbara shaping bay, passionately describing curves, vees, concaves, and the precise uprightness of the ideal fin template to Aliotti. Their FaceTime conversation carries the tone of an autumnal check-in after an intense summer fling.
Meanwhile, William goes on a getaway binge, bouncing between the Canary Islands, Chile, and Namibia — a mistress under each arm. His wanderlust crescendos with a final honeymoon trip to the Mentawais, where, at Kandui, he finds himself in a love triangle, pressed to choose between one of Lovelace’s creations.
Ryan opened up: “I feel really lucky that I get to apply myself and see some type of return. My thing that I do every day is a physical product that I can strive for. At the end of the day, I have something tangible in my hands that I can either say I did well or I didn’t.”
Their relationship spawned the SateLite, an asymmetrical surfboard that, like the Pedestrian Ship — conceived during a much shorter fling with Dave Rastovich — has been brought into the tangible realm to satisfy the whims of those willing to explore the kinks of twin-ruddered experimentation.
