Jordy Smith Didn’t Mean To Make A Title Series
But his West Oz vlog might just age into world champ foreshadowing.
You’ve all seen a barrel, which makes it pointless to attempt describing one’s visual delineations.
Jordy Smith’s new vlog episode opens with one where his knees bend only slightly, his back hunches forward just a touch, and his fingertips drag across the water as it rises. This is one of the “two-to-three-foot little shacks” he’d been hoping for the day before.
Expectations exceeded, much like his 2025 season so far. After claiming ownership of Punta Roca earlier this year, Jordy just won his second event during his stay in the West. While there’s no contest footage to be seen here, we get a good glimpse of what a work trip to this part of Australia looked like for the big South African.
Few words are spoken, but when they do come out, they’re loaded with wit and candor. As usual.

“I’m gonna do some slow cutbacks out here,” he says, tilting his head toward Main Break, before glancing at The Box and adding, “Any free surf trip, you’d be screaming, jumping, running furiously over there.”
“But I wanna do some cutbacks over here,” he reiterates, pointing back toward the main contest site.
Skeptical within reason, Jordy gave his best to decimate Main Break before it stopped breaking. And, judging from his free surfs, it looked like he’d be prepared for whatever the ocean had in store for him.
Though these aren’t technically a road-to-the-title series, they might end up being exactly that when all’s said and done.
