Jordy Smith And Ricky Basnett Share A South African Superheat

“I’m gonna let Jordy take the inside and then just fucken burn him straight.” – Ricky Basnett

The last time you heard the name Ricky Basnett, he was getting eliminated in Round 2 of the 2008 Pipeline Masters — the 11th and final time he would receive a 33rd place on the ASP World Championship Tour that year, and ever.

Ricky’s perfectly imperfect season was an unprecedented feat in professional surfing, and like any true champion would, Rick took his unvictory a little too far, celebrating his achievement for 10 whole years before finally sliding back into the wettie and sharing a lovely session with his old mate Jordan Michael Smith (who had grown a whole 14 inches since the last time Ricky saw him!).

The bright side? After a decade of revelatory behavior, Ricky still rips!

“He’s still pushing me today. I mean, he was surfing even better than I was out there,” laughed Jordy.

And it’s true! While Jordy resorted to his classic safety-surfing combos, Ricky came out swinging with airs, tail-whips, and the odd underwater nosedip reverse 360-degree maneuver.

Maybe ol’ Rick’s got a few 33rds err, umm, 25ths left in him yet.
