John Florence, Two Sharks And A Few Tubes In West Oz
“We saw a splash and put the contest on hold…we found two sharks” – JJF on what lurks beneath the murk.
John John Florence flew from Tullamarine to Perth almost without consideration after losing his Round 3 heat at Bells. Who wouldn’t want to spend their time underneath a few uncrowded curtains before the Margaret River Pro kicks off.
Unfortunately for John, on his pre-contest fun heat, he encountered the one thing that West Oz has in equal abundance to barrels.
Sharks.
Western Australia is renowned for proportionately large shark populations, in particular White Pointers. And when there’s an abundance of sharks you can expect two things, a large dosage of sightings and an unhealthy number of shark attacks – many of which are lamentably fatal.
To be precise, 15 fatal attacks since 2000 and a total of 114 unprovoked attacks have occurred in WA since the records began in 1900.
Luckily for John John and co. they were let off with a friendly visit and a drone shot to reiterate who the Champ under the surface is.
Let’s hope this splash filled fright doesn’t rattle the 2x Champ, reigning Main Break winne and boomerang bandit as much as Zeke did down at that Bells Bowl.
