Introducing: The Hovering Zen Master Mauro Diaz
A phenomenal surfer with an admirable approach to life.
I spent more time next to Mauro than I did anyone else on this trip.
We shared a room, a bunk bed, and enough laughs to chisel a beer belly into a six pack.
I think it was Eric Geiselman who first referred to Mauro as the Zen master, and he was spot on with the analogy. Mauro really takes care of himself, mentally and physically. More often than not, I’d find Mauro meditating, doing yoga, or simply painting.
Not once did I see him stressed out, anxious, or worried about anything that wasn’t directly in front of him. His balance of socializing with the rest of the house while still making time for himself was impeccable.
As a frantic lunatic who spent most of each day running errands, I found it hard to sit still. A few days into the trip, I started asking myself, “What Would Mauro Do?” That’s when I started to find some desperately needed alone time. I was finally able to disconnect from the organized chaos and enjoy the charming environment I was fortunate enough to occupy.
The acronym W.W.M.D. helped me tremendously while fluctuating between work and play at Vans Stab High, Central America, presented by Monster Energy. The phrase, however, rendered useless during my surf breaks because what Mauro can do on a surfboard is a little more complex than a few breathing exercises.
