Iceberg Step-offs And Glacial Surfing With Mick Fanning And Mason Ho

If I get caught inside one more time I’m gonna die from this icecream headache.” – Mason Ho

“We’re going to surf this little left hand point, it breaks every four to six hours… but we’re ready,” says an almost unrecognisable, rubber-hooded Mick Fanning. “We just have to wait for the right direction of the glacier to fall down that actually creates a wave.”

Soon enough an apartment sized chunk of ice breaks free of the glacier and it’s game on for Mick and eternally stoked companion Mason Ho, who’s happens to be first in position.

“That was the coolest one footer I’ve ever caught in my life… I’ve caught a lot of one footers,” he says after the once-in-a-lifetime wiggle. Perhaps not a world first ride, but his following, iceberg step-off certainly might be.

Welcome to Rip Curl’s Comfortably Numb, a Search episode of the most extreme kind. It’s a boat trip in the far north, where the rubber is thick and the landscape is out of this world. This is Mick Fanning aka “chief wood hunter and chief fire starter” like you’ve never seen him before. Opening up on time away from competitive obligations and the rollercoaster year that was 2015. Pairing this man with Mason was the ultimate casting win.

“For me this trip came at the perfect time, it was totally different to anything I’ve done.” – Mick Fanning.
