“I Haven’t Seen Anyone Attack Kandui Left Like That Since Bruce”

Just like that, we’ve arrived at a moment. Nothing to celebrate, nothing to mourn. The hermit is a movie star. The champ has finally packed it in. We’re learning to protect our brains, yet still have a kink to fling them over the ledge of waves capable of blowing them to pieces. And now, it’s possible to sniff out a surfer’s nationality from the scraps of their edit.

There’s a cinematic element that’s become the signature theme of clips dropping from the Hawaiian islands, often set to an electronic or hip-hop track. They appear to take themselves rather seriously, but let’s be clear: the boys fucking go for it.

Big punts, heavy water, slow-motion head shots, dramatic visuals, and some unapologetic main character energy — there’s something very obviously Hawaiian about Barron Mamiya’s latest clip, Interlude.

Filmed on the North Shore and in Indonesia, Barron takes the power axe to both locations, and as the owner of Kandui Resort noted, he’s got some real heavy boots on. “I haven’t seen anyone attack Kandui Left like that on their backhand since Bruce.”

Much respect, and as always, Aloha.
