Derrick Disney Don’t Need No Stinkin’ Center Fin
Twins and quads prevail in the playful wedges of North County SD.
Like his Encinitas forebears Rob Machado and Ryan Burch, Derrick Disney grew up on a healthy diet of lycras, ex-pro-ish judges, and 15-minute buzzers.
But at a certain age the competitive cycle didn’t suit Disney, who preferred the smooth glide of a hand-shaped twin to the shredding ability of a team-lite thruster. So he quit the lower tour and focused his energy on clean artistic lines, which granted Derrick not only inner peace but also a long-held Vissla sponsorship.
All things considered, it was a wonderful career pivot.
Here Derrick displays the fruits of his labor, which consists primarily of grooving atop San Diegan wedges on boards without a center fin. It ain’t the most exciting surfing you’ll see this week, but it sure does make us want to slide.
