Corey Lopez: 5’5″ x 19 1/4″ On The Banks
Present day nostalgia.
Corey Lopez and Chris Ward in …Lost’s “5’5″ X 19 1/4”…and Other Oddities, marked an era of hybrid design in high-performance surfing. While narrow, rockered out 6’1 thrusters were the norm in 1997, Corey and Chris were seen whipping around two of Matt Biolos’ Round Nose Fishes and interest in fun design piqued. Fast forward a decade, and Dane Reynolds brought the Channel Islands’ Neckbeard hybrid to the world stage. Ever since then, the new norm has been boards two-four-plus inches shorter than that of the 90’s and early noughties. With that said, here’s Corey Lopez giving Hurricane Nicole a going over fresh off an injury that’s kept him out of the water for the better half of last year. But, by the looks of his surfing, he recovered just fine. Oh, and his kid charges.
