Can The European Invasion Be Stopped?
Billabong Europe’s youngest suggest: no, not in the Mentawais either.
“Maybe we can make them go away. Here they come, Europeans.”
Sung by London new-wave outfit Europeans in 1978, nearly half a century has passed and still no one has figured out how to stop them coming. And, per Paul Evans, 2026 will be particularly generous with those who hail from the old, and possibly last, continent to be introduced to the act of riding waves.
As part of their long-running Bloodlines program, Billabong Europe sent some of their youngest, fittest, and most dexterous to surfing’s über-theme park, to sample its finest rides and leave fresh tracks on well-worn walls. It’s not every day you see the regional shot-callers of a brand swipe the Amex on a Ments boat trip for their junior team. And, they kinda fucking scored.
Meet Axel Dominguez, Alejo Valido, Josh Karbus, Oxel Oregi, and Gabriel Aviben.
New faces, familiar places.
