Aritz Aranburu’s African Tutelage
Two promising Basque groms enjoy a Moroccan tuberiding study abroad program with one of Europe’s most stylish
Earlier this year, Aritz Aranburu took it upon himself to drag young Basque Country prodigies, Iker (16) and Adur (12) Amatriain—sons of European big wave pioneer Ibon Amatriain—to Northern Africa, for a first-hand lesson in threading roping right-hand barrels.
While the Amatriain Brothes have benefited greatly from their father’s influence, there’s no doubt spending a week chasing Moroccan pits with Aritz—a guy as familiar with the rocky, desert coastline as just about anyone, evident here—left its mark, the two both scoring what have to be the barrels of their little lives (especially Iker’s gem at 2:26).
