Are We Yet To See Jordy Smith’s Best?
The South African’s recent output suggests so.
Shane Beschen swears there’s no better way to wax a freshie than while watching a surf film in your living room, just before heading out for a surf.
You’d think there’d be a direct link between film quality and wax job finesse. Jordy Smith’s latest upload begins with the towering South African waxing a board while watching throwaway airs at a wavepool. “Mind-numbing crap,” he calls it.
We can’t quite tell how Jordy’s wax carpet turned out, but it hasn’t seemed to hinder his performance(s) during the first couple of months of the year. At 37, Jordy’s gray-bearding his way into his finest surfing, blending old-school fundamentals with contemporary progression, often donning the world’s most controversial wetsuit in tropical climate.

Joined by guest stars John John Florence and Kelly Slater, the average age of the surfers in this clip hovers around 40.66 years, making a solid case for one achieving peak performance around middle age.
Lately, there’s been a surge in Jordy content, both long and short form. It took him a while to enter the battle of the thumbnails after moving from Southern California to Oahu, and finally back to South Africa — but the North Shore stint may have nurtured in him a propensity for content creation.
May it continue indefinitely.
