Another Brief Glimpse Of Cinematic Nostalgia
Taylor Steele directs a Stephanie Gilmore and Dave Rastovich dual performance.
To celebrate the release of Taylor Steele’s new movie, Proximity, we’ve been dropping sets of clips over the past week highlighting each surfer pairing from the film. First we had Craig Anderson and Rob Machado, then we checked out Albee Layer and Shane Dorian. And now we’re putting the spotlight on two people everyone wishes they could have the same style as, and a duo Taylor liked filming together particularly: Stephanie Gilmore and Dave Rastovich.
“I’m extremely inspired by Steph Gilmore’s surfing and her overall vibe,” Taylor told Stab when we talked to him after the first trailer for Proximity initially dropped. “So I’ve been racking my brain over who would be the perfect pairing for her. I really wanted somebody that surfed like her, carries themselves in the same way and travels in the same way. I went with Dave Rastovich as a fit.
A behind the scenes look at Steph and Dave’s Proximity section.
“I thought maybe it was a little bit of a stretch. Until I put them on a trip together and not only saw just how much they’re alike but also how they just took different paths: Steph with competition and Dave with freesurfing.”
Combining two silky regular footers is a bit of a stretch? Sure. Regardless, Taylor shot Steph and Dave down in Baja. A spot known for having more empty right-hand point breaks than you can shake a cactus at. That combo in that setting is sure to yield some sparkling results, and we’re definitely excited.
To get ready for it all, we plucked our two favourite sections from the Poor Specimen Video Productions vault of Steph and Dave. Specifically, Steph’s quick section (seen above) from 2012’s Here & Now and Dave’s appearance (find it all the way at the top) in 2010’s Castles In The Sky. Bundled together above for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy.
And after you’re done, make sure to check out Proximity as it premiers around the world. Tour dates can be found here, and here’s a trailer for the film as well. If you would like some unique glance at Steph and Dave’s Proximity section especially, check out the virtual-reality friendly clip of them surfing down in Baja together.
