Yesterday, In Man vs Machine

Sometimes you look up and think, sick floater!

Apparently, jet skis in the lineup are still a thing, and with the swell on blast on the Gold Coast, some folks have been running wide open.

The highlight—or lowlight—came in the form of this driver’s drop-tail floater into oblivion over his mate at Currumbin Alley. The clip was captured by a 16-year-old Luke Workman and has since, as you might expect, become a viral hit.

“Everyone was just amazed and in shock after they fell, he got sucked backwards into the wave while his mate was in the barrel,” Workman told the Gold Coast Bulletin. “They were on one of the smaller waves that came through as well.”

The surf’s been too good—and the current too strong—not to partake in a step-off or two, but spots like Currumbin and Tallebudgera Creek morphed into a virtual water world with the pulsing swell.

The fuzz was sent down to investigate the scene, but in true cop fashion, missed the boat.

“Police did get down there….there were only two or three jet skis out,” said Senior Sgt Kim Hill.

Gold Coast City Council Chief Lifeguard Warren Young wasn’t much more help, explaining, “When it’s big like that they shouldn’t be doing it.”

The fact of business is that while this is a pretty entertaining clip and we’re stoked nobody lost their head, these two have a lot further to go if they’re going to attain the pro status achieved by Reef McIntosh and Raimana VanBastolaer at Teahupoo back in May 2005.

“That was probably the heaviest thing I’ve ever seen,” validated a baffled Andy Irons
