A Stylish Slice of Basque Sincerity in the Canary Islands
These damn European kids sure surf with a lot of heart. Andy Criere gets broody against the backdrop of Lanzarote.
Andy Criere is a stylish Basque goofyfoot, sweet, polite kid, handy with a blade and a heartbreaker with the Spanish, French, and Portuguese ladies.
There’s this thing with the Basque guys. Where Californians push an understated cool, or East Coasters push a working class grit, Hawaiians a laid-back machismo, the Basque kids surf with emotion. Fucker’s pour their hearts out, in edits and during sessions, getting spat out of barrels all over the European and North African coast, tears of triumph and joy running down their handsome goddamned faces. Andy’s that kind of kid, all bright-eyed after a good surf, which literally anywhere we showed up for a session in Europe Andy was in the mix.
Andy collaborated with Canarian filmmaker Adrian Rodd on this broody color concept, “Equilibrium,” filmed on the Sahara-swept, volcanic coast of Lanzarote.
