Two Percent’s “Smooch” Starts With Kanye, Ends With Crosby, Lives Up To The Hype
A visual representation of California’s world-class surf renaissance.
As soon as Kanye West’s 2004 song, “Slow Jamz” ushers in Cole Houshmand’s opening section, I knew this was going to be fun.
Unlike Kanye, San Clemente’s surf scene is on an upward trajectory and nobody is trying to cancel it.
It’s been 33 years since a Californian won a world title (Tom Curren in 1990). But, next year’s CT will feature 9 Californians, 5 of whom are from San Clemente (Sawyer Lindblad, Griffin Colapinto, Crosby Colapinto, Kade Matson, and Cole Houshmand). Speaking numerically, this is one of the most prodigious generations of Californian surfers in history.
The “Golden State” is taking care of all of its droughts.
Stab has documented 2 Percent’s coup d’etat since its inception. You can read up on all the actors involved here: Kolohe Andino, Cole Houshmand, Crosby Colapinto, and Griffin Colapinto.
This film echoes the sophomoric, O.C., suburban slicker, “Agent Orange” ethos of beloved films of the past like the …Lost movies, the opening scene of Billabong’s “Blow Up”, and Andrew Doheny/Ford Archbold’s opus, 3Slobs.
If there is a difference between this generation of Zillenial/Gen-Z/Zoomers and past generations of San Clementians, it’s a sense of self-awareness. Kolohe, in his Stab interview, said he knows some criticize San Clemente surfers as being “privileged”, gilded, and otherwise insular, but, he stands for a new wave of OC surfers who, to use the tired cliché, are “letting their surfing do the talking” — it seems to be working.
Guided by the now infamous Big 20 Hammer, the surfing is outstanding, the music is divine, the E-Bikes are charged, and the whole thing fits in your lunch break.
